Have you ever thought what it would look like if George Washington would have decided to take on the British by himself? A Revolution of one. I can tell you this – it would have been the shortest revolt in human history. The greatest accomplishments in life require more than the total efforts of one single individual. Don’t get me wrong, there is enormous power in the resolve of one, but there is a far greater chance of exponential impact and change through the unity of many. I could give example after example in history where this truth has been proven; but for the sake of time, I leave that for your own exploration and discovery.
I will, however, give you a simple example from Scripture that demonstrates this point beautifully and then unpack some promises from God that illuminate the power of unity as it pertains to community transformation. The nation of Israel had pushed their God to His limits. Due to their refusal to turn from collective disobedience, God allowed the Babylonian army to conqueror their land and carry them away captive. God remained faithful to His promise and brought His people back to their land. Unfortunately, not everything was what we call move-in ready. The city of Jerusalem had been destroyed and much work was needed to transform the city into a place that was safe and livable.
Although it seemed like an impossible feat, God raised up a man to inspire a people to collectively work towards the goal of rebuilding. Nehemiah proved to be a great leader, but he could not bring about the transformation of this city alone. This is where the beauty of unity comes into play. He needed a people and the people needed a leader. Together, they were able to accomplish the impossible!
So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work – Nehemiah 4:6
So the wall was finished…in fifty-two days – Nehemiah 6:15
An amazing thing happens when the people of God come together to accomplish the purposes of God. When we can set aside our differences and unite together under the banner of love for Jesus, God has a platform to work from! I love how the Psalmist states it, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity…for there the Lord commanded the blessing” (Psalm 133:1,3b). If a community is in need of transformation, we as the church must unite so that God can command a blessing into the context of that need. Jesus prayed this truth in John 17:21 when He said “that they may be one, as You, Father are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” Oneness with God and each other is a power testimony to the world that validates the Gospel we preach!
When we unite together, not only are we creating an atmosphere for revival and community transformation, but we are also being the answer to the prayers of Jesus! What an amazing opportunity! I pray that as Holy Spirit continues to bring us together as ONE, that we will unleash a legacy of unity that changes not only our cities, but the generations that will follow in our footsteps. May we pioneer this road and steward this call well. God is ready to start commanding! Are we ready to start uniting?
